Watchmen: Greatest Quotes

It is 25 years since the first volume of "Watchmen", which many think is the greatest comic ever created hit bookshelves. Watchmen, a 12 issue series, written the legendary Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons was published between September 1986 and October 1987. It has since become to be considered as one of the greatest literary achievements ever. It was the only comic or in glossy marketing terms, graphic novel to be included in Time Magazine's All-time 100 Greatest Novels list.

The title is derived from the speech that JF Kennedy was scheduled to deliver on November 22, 1963. That never happened because he was assassinated on the same day. The speech goes like this: "We, in this country, in this generation, are -- by destiny rather than by choice -- the "watchmen" on the walls of world freedom. We ask, therefore, that we may be worthy of our power and responsibility, that we may exercise our strength with wisdom and restraint, and that we may achieve in our time and for all time the ancient vision of "peace on earth, good will toward men." That must always be our goal, and the righteousness of our cause must always underlie our strength. For as was written long ago: "except the Lord keep the city, the watchmen waketh but in vain."" The full speech is archived here: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/presidents/35_kennedy/psources/ps_tradmart.html

To mark the 25th Anniversary of Watchmen, I have compiled a list of the best quotes from each of the 12 volumes. Some are downright kick-ass one-liners while some are conversations. If you have not read Watchmen, you might not get what some quotes imply. I have excluded spoilers for those who have not read the book or seen the movie. But I implore you to read the book even if you have watched the film. Its freaking awesome. So without much ado, here's the Greatest Quotes from Watchmen:

----
The streets are extended gutters and the gutters are full of blood and when the drains finally scab over, all the vermin will drown. The accumulated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout "save us!"... and I'll look down, and whisper "no".

Eccentric Cricket Shots Video Gallery

In celebration of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, The Hindu posted a slide show of some of the most eccentric shots in cricket, and I thought a video compilation of those will be more illustrative than images. So, here it is:

The helicopter shot

The discoop

The switch hit

The paddle-sweep

The slog sweep

The Collingwood catch
Err.. Couldn't get a video of the "short arm jab." So here's one of the greatest catches ever by the man in discussion. Yeah, it's pretty lame to settle with a video of a catch, but by golly! What a catch!

The reverse sweep

  • 14 April: Doubles. Dir: Sohan Sinulal. *ing: Mammootty, Nadia Moidu.
Note: Of course, this schedule is suject to change. After all it's cinema of Kerala.

SEASON PREVIEW:

Mohanlal has 2 multistarrers in the line-up which are sure to rake in big bucks at least in the first week, but I'm not too sure if he can really be happy about it. This is playing safe to the core. Sure, 2010 sucked for him, but he really don't have to do this. To be frank, I'm more excited about the yet to be shot Pranayam , directed by Blessy. We can hope that these summer offerings will at least be good entertainers.

Mammootty, just like Mohanlal never loses faith in the macho-maker Shaji Kailas. The fact however is that the fate of this sequel to August 1 depends very much on S. N. Swami's script. The old man has been form out for a long time, but we can never write him off. Mammootty has to be praised for giving chances to new directors. The idea of the film being based on brother-sister relationship featuring stars in their middle ages looks interesting.

The most awaited movie of the season won't be any of these Mohanlal or Mammootty films though. The historical action film Urumi , directed by ace cinematographer Santhosh Sivan based on a plot to assassinate Vasco Da Gama was in news for a long time. In news mainly because of the star cast rather than other cinematic aspects though. The film boasts the presence of big names such as Prabu Deva, Arya, Genelia, Vidya Balan, Tabu and Amole Gupte along with lead star Prithviraj. Written by Shankar Rakamrishnan, writer and director of Island Express section of Kerala Cafe, Urumi is among the costliest films made in Malayalam with a reported budget of Rs.20 crores. The film is squeezed between biggies in the calender and thats not quite a good news for the producers.
